This is the story of Muddy Waters — the man who quietly started it all:

In 1962, a young London band was still nameless when a journalist phoned asking what they were called. Put on the spot, Brian Jones glanced down at a Muddy Waters LP on the floor one track was ‘Rollin’ Stone.’ And just like that: the Rolling Stones. The biggest band in the world, named off a record on the carpet.
Muddy was born dirt-poor in the Mississippi Delta, playing the same haunted acoustic blues as Robert Johnson. But when he moved to Chicago, he did the thing that changed music he plugged his guitar into an amplifier and turned it up loud. Electric, urgent, dangerous. It’s been called ‘the missing link between the Delta blues and rock and roll.’
Everyone came through him. His roaring guitar shocked England on tour and lit a fire under a generation of British kids. And in 1955, when a young Chuck Berry came to Chicago for a break, it was Muddy who sent him to the record label (Chess) that made him a star.
And that phrase ‘rolling stone’ never stopped rolling. It named the band. It named the biggest music magazine on the planet. All from one 1950 song, by one sharecropper’s son who carried the blues out of the Mississippi mud and plugged it into the wall.

“Muddy Waters died in 1983, and they called him the father of the blues. But it’s bigger than that. Every time you say ‘Rolling Stones,’ every time you pick up that magazine, you’re echoing the name of a poor kid from the Delta who plugged in a guitar in Chicago and lit the fuse on rock and roll. The world just learned to call it by other names.”
